Are Eggs and Cigarettes equally harmful ? posted on May 6, 2018Eggs have been promoted as healthy in some researches while it is condemned in other studies. Let’s dig deeper. The controversy erupted after a study was published in the ‘Journal of Atherosclerosis Research’ in the year 2012. In this study the Canadian scientists used Ultrasound measurements of the carotid plaque build up in the arteries of 1231 patients at the cardiovascular health clinics. Questionnaires included egg-yolk consumption and cigarette smoking among other things. The researchers concluded that regular egg consumption and smoking five cigarettes a day follows a similar pattern with regards to plaque buildings. Harvard Medical School, based on two large research studies, points out that one egg per day can be consumed safely by healthy people but they pointed out that eggs are definitely not the optimal choice for breakfast. This debate will probably continue for a long time to come. Another point to consider is that many studies are funded by corporates and therefore biases in these studies cannot be completely ruled out. Observe yourself whether you find eggs difficult to digest. Even if you do not have any digestive issues, consume no more than one egg per day.For optimal health, try to look for organic eggs. Remember that the studies which recommend daily egg consumption is only for healthy people. If you have cardiovascular disease or diabetes, these claims will not hold true for you.
